You can install a rivet nut into the particle board, and it will not break the rivet nut. Of course, if you hang really heavy things on the particle board using the rivet nut, the rivet nut may begin to shear down the particle board, as the rivet nut material is much stronger than the particle board.
You can install a rivet nut into the sheet metal of the van as well! This would be the preferred method. Install the rivet nut into the sheet metal of the van, then hold up the particle board, and zip a bolt through the particle board into the rivet nut. Maybe use some washers on either side of the particle board, and you will have a very nice application for your long-term enjoyment/use!
